Seeking a little distraction from the boredom of the long journey home, Pfc. George Witcofsky - wounded by a mine - contemplates a pinup calendar as he recovers on a hospital ship off the coast of France.
While tens of thousands of women at home sustained the U.S. war effort by working in factories and shipyards to produce war matériel and keep industrial output high, GI’s were probably more aware of the contributions made by pinup girls such as Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Dorothy Lamour, and the painted “Varga girls.”
